Week 4’s lecture on sound was based around the idea of media affordances, focusing on the element of sound. Sound is ‘created by physical vibrations that set molecules in motion, creating sound waves that travel through the air’. Sound is a pivotal component of the senses, through our ears we are continuously absorbing soundscape around us. Right now, I am trying to write this blog with the sound of extremely loud construction and trying to overpower it with music. So many sounds at once, yet my brain is choosing to listen to the music, blocking out all construction noises. Through the components of sound; sound waves, wavelength, pitch, frequency, pitch, timbre, harmonics, loudness and rhythm, all combine and make sound possible. With sound, we are able to filter it in many different ways through the form of sound, listening and hearing: ‘ A distinctive attitude or approach that can be brought to bear on a listening experience.’ Hearing is unintentional; the ability of perceiving sound by the ear- it just happens. Where as hearing is on a subconscious level, you choose to do it.
