Todays main question was “What is media?” As we all know, the media has many different forms and positions within todays society. ‘Media is not a thing out there’, as it is a deniable object in a coherent entity, that acts in particular ways. Media can be a place, ecology which most of us inhabit, causing society to immerse those values in everyday life. The power and influence comes from media texts, sites where meanings are generated through the manipulation of materials and codes towards a certain audience. Media is a form of communication, and in life today, its crazy to think, but it is now part of reality. It is who we are in the world, and what we encounter in everyday life, starting to shape our identities tremendously.
MEDIA’S FOUNDATION:
SENDER –> MEDIUM –> MESSAGE –> RECEIVER
As media has a large effect on the mainstream of society, we were asked to complete a lectorial exercise at the State Library, a very public place for students and tourists, to sit and perceive the media surrounding us. Unlucky for me, I had left my phone in the car that morning! However managed to get some powerful images through my group.
‘Media is Everywhere’ Noticing Audit
Up high
– Movie billboard
– Free exhibition posters
Mid- Ground
– People sitting on the benches on their phones, not acknowledging their surroundings
– Advertisiments (lots of them!!)
– Photoshoots of surroundings/ city hall
Back- Ground
– Tram Advertisments
– Melbourne central signage
– Logos of all shops inside
– Myki
Fore-Ground
The campaign ‘Share the streets’ happened to be promoted at the time from our lectorial, towards the city hall. I personally thought this campaign was amazing, as the issue of being so distracted and blind-sided of whats happening on the road can create to a large risk of danger. Something so important, a form of media promotion that can create awareness to so many students walking the streets.

Foruntley for me I didn’t have my smart phone on me, however could observe those around me and the way they used their phones. We started off the exercise by adding each other on facebook, to make a group in order to share photos. I managed to ask others to check the time, and take photos (the power of media where I had to ask others to use their phones for me!!)
