John Cage 4’33”

An absolute classic, if you haven’t heard this firstly, you’ve both had your head buried under a rock, and secondly, you haven’t had to sit through one of the most confusing music or society & culture classes utilised frequently by substitute teachers and guest lecturers alike.

John Cage’s avante-garde composition experiments with the use of noise and silence. Importantly for us it also challenges the roles of the producer and audience, drawing focus to the idea that one cannot exist without the other. Attention of the piece is drawn to ambience, the location – a central idea of this course.

There are many further readings online of those praising criticising and discussing it’s relevance, if you’re interested I recommend starting here with acclaimed writer and musician James Pritchett’s essay
