IM: Week 3 Sketch Reflection

This week we had four sketches to do. Two about fast; one single shot and another with several shots, and two about slow with the same constraints.

For fast with several shots, Cooking, I showed the process of meat getting from the packaging to the plate. I used sharp edits (or at least tried to, iMovie dimmed the sound at the end of each clip, killing the effect that i wanted) to show the various stages of cooking. I like to think that cooking is fast, and the quick cuts are designed to reflect that.

For fast in a single shot, Drop, I literally dropped my phone from my bed with the record button on. It was pretty fast. There wasn’t much to it. I probably wouldn’t have used it had it not been for the phone bouncing off the pillow and flipping upward so you can see me. I thought it looked preeeety cool. I don’t think this one reflects the criteria as well as it could have because of the lack of speed in the later half of the video. If I had dropped it higher, maybe from my roof, and had somebody catch it, that could have worked, but I filmed it at night so it would have been pretty bleak.

For slow with several shots, Slow Resolution, I went for something a bit more metaphorical. It could be interpreted as the long time it takes to get from one country to the next, but it’s meant to be showing the poor relationship America has with Russia, North Korea and Iran.

For slow in a single shot, Seasons, I tried to show the seasonal change in a single tree. I decided to do this when I saw one of my trees in my garden had a few yellow and red leaves, and I thought that it could be a seamless transition in a video showing summer turn to autumn.

I’m enjoying making these sketch videos more than I was the first two weeks. I feel I’m thinking about them more, and designing them rather than filming my surroundings.
