In today’s tutorial we branched out of the classroom and spent some time at Testing Grounds on City Rd. Upon visiting the site, I was unsure of what to expect but was drawn in immediately by the unique aesthetics of the space. The amount of found and natural materials used to build the space has a really special quality to it being in the middle of the CBD.
As a free, public art space, Testing Grounds has been home to some really innovative exhibitions that involve performance, sculpture and light art which I found really exciting and can’t wait to find out more about.
Unfortunately while exploring the area, my smartphone ran out of battery so I was unable to document much of the experience, but I really enjoyed just walking around the space and experiencing the site without the distraction of technology. I do intend to go back, however, to engage with the space some more on my own. One art piece that was discussed involved the artist encased cracks found in the ground around the site into concrete and then placed these back into the space. I would love to go back to Testing Grounds and locate some of the cubes and see what natural materials or otherwise have found their way into the cracks. I just found the concept of this piece a really beautiful one that I would love to explore further.
