This advanced video piece was without a doubt the single most frustrating experience of the entire course for me. It really was a case of having a plan that works on paper, but just didn’t amount to anything realistic for someone with very limited editing and vfx skill, and therefore the piece I submitted is an almost complete deviation from this plan. Originally, taking inspiration from my first observation in which I describe the lights as being continuous like lights in an endlessly long tunnel, I wanted my piece to represent this endlessness by starting with a still shot of the lights, and smoothly transitioning them into various, aesthetically similar scenes. These included the aforementioned tunnel, as well as an alleyway, a tech store with lit screens on either side etc. However due to unforeseen circumstances, most of these settings became unavailable to film in. Additionally, the few scenes I did manage to shoot did not line up anywhere near the idea I had planned. I had planned the script around a lot of forward movement, which without a dolly or similar piece of equipment was essentially impossible to do whilst keeping a stable image; I had planned to counteract this by using zoom to replicate forward movement, but this looked so jarring and god awful that I’m not going to discuss it any further. The shots I took with panning or tilting movement seemed ok in isolation, but I wasn’t able to edit them well enough to make it look anywhere near something I was going to be happy with. The work I went with instead is something I’m extremely unhappy with, but it was at least a preferable substitute to submitting a good idea that had been completely butchered. Because I had planned so much around the idea of transitions, I instead worked on a video centring around different forms of light transitioning into each other. The first shot is the only one I kept from my first takes, and the original transition of movement idea still exists here, using tilt and a crossfade to transition shots 1 and 2, and pan + crossfade for shots 2+3. The rest has no relevance to the original observation other than the fact that they’re lights and I had no better ideas. If I’m going to take anything from this, it’s that I need to learn how to adapt better, and plan out backup ideas, as well as double check beforehand whether or not its legal to set up a camera at an underground platform (It’s not).
