Oh wow look it’s Jackson filming trees again. Such variety in his work. What a creative soul. Accompanying an observation about the natural world, I wanted to emphasise both the literal visuals of the observations, as well as convey a similar feeling to that expressed through the writing. The footage shot is from the Plenty River, which was the subject of my original observation. As filming the original location is obviously a major advantage in creating an accurate representation, I wanted to capitalise on this by attempting to retracing the same steps I took as I was planning the written element, to take a more factual, documentary type approach. While basing the visuals solely around the literal content of the observation is far from the most creative idea, it allowed me to focus more on the aesthetic side, taking time to really finetune camera angles and play with a variety of different exposure settings to get the visuals as close to my satisfaction as possible. As the majority of the piece was about the deterioration of the river and the dull, murky appearance of the world around it, I wanted to replicate this as accurately as possible in my filming by slightly underexposing some of my shots, and lowering the white balance to give everything a melancholy, bluish tone; I also had the advantage of shooting on an overcast day which I believe also contributed to the overall feel. As previously discussed, the majority of the shots taken were of areas which inspired my writing, and are based on the literal content provided by the audio, there are a few that I’d like to discuss further. As the end of the observation provides a tone change by discussing ideas of the river retaining its beauty, and the interview gives insight into the river being in a state of repair, the final shot of the single fern is intended to represent a sign of life in what is a fairly dead environment. The shot of the echidna was also not planned, but it was a lucky coincidence as I believe it effectively encapsulates a similar idea of life. Overall, I am pretty happy with how the filming went, and I believe the shots I managed to get fit the audio content extremely well.
