Probably the most interesting part of the eavesdropping exhibit at Ian Potter was the recording of Samson Young’s Muted Situations #5: Muted Chorus. This performance showed a plain darkened room with a choir, who performed using only muted sounds; whispered vocals, shuffling of papers and inhalations. I found this piece extremely haunting and eerie; the whispers gave the piece a strange sense of closeness, as if they were whispering in my ear, while the straightforward, driving rhythm in the second half combined with a foreign (to me) vocal language created an unnerving, almost occult sensation. The whispers also fit perfectly with the eavesdropping theme
