When reading all of the studio pitches for 2019, this studio stood out to me as one with likely a strong focus on writing, with the goal of converting it into different forms of expressive media. This concept appealed to me a lot; writing, particularly creative, has always been an interest and I believe a passion of mine, and as a media student I have developed and been able to hone my skills in camerawork and audio. However, I’ve always wanted the chance to combine these skills into a single creative work, one that was entirely written and filmed from scratch without a strongly pre-defined topic or intention other than to simply serve as entertainment. Making a large-scale project like this has always been one of my ultimate goals as a media student, and being in this studio seems like it would be a good opportunity to hopefully achieve this. While in this studio working towards this end goal, I want to first improve some of my media skills to make my project as enjoyable and professional as possible. First of these skills would be in my general camerawork ability; while I think my writing ability could definitely produce some uniquely engaging films and I have a strong background in audio composition, my ability to produce striking visuals to compliment them has been an area of struggle for me. Something I feel would make a significant improvement in my visual work is developing a basic understanding of framing, working with camera angles and improving on technical components such as lighting, camera effects and movement to help compliment the both the subject and their setting on film. Location in film is obviously crucial in conveying mood and setting a particular ambience in a shot, and it’s something I’ve felt I could use improvement in. In my previous projects, while I’ve had great locations to film in, I felt that they were lacking a lot of their impact and lost their personal atmosphere when it came time to record. I think developing these skills would be a huge step in the right directions for putting together a large-scale creative work, and is something I hope this studio will offer.
