The Creative Power of Collaboration

In Keith Sawyer, 2007, Group Genius: The creative power of collaboration, New York: Basic Books, 2007, pp.39-57 focuses on the group flow and the heightened state of consciousness. In our workshop class we talked about how when we are grouped into a team we are able to achieve greatness. The reading also stated the ten conditions for group flow:

  1. The Groups Goal
  2. Close Listening > Deep Listening
  3. Complete Concentration
  4. Being in control (everyone feeling that they have a voice in the group)
  5. Blended Egos (like in a jazz ensemble, not one instrument can do a solo or it will just sound wrong)
  6. Equal Participation
  7. Familiarity > Problem Solving
  8. Communication
  9. Moving forward (Extend on it, build on it, and keep going)
  10. The potential for Failure

All these conditions specifically highlight all the corners and traps that people fall into when they are apart of a group. From being in a group before, i have fallen into these difficulties and trying to find your way out is always harder than falling in.
