Week 8 Media Lectorial: Narrative

On the discussion on narrative structure we watched this interesting short film, directed by Daniel Askill

The idea we explored was whether it was a narrative or non-narrative piece.

Reasons for Non-narrative:
– Lack of cohesion within story
– No moments of conflict or emotional journey
– No explanation of why the events are taking place

Reasons of Narrative:
– Builds towards a certain point at the end of each segment (e.g. cars colliding)
– Parts of the film form an order and procession (birth, between and rebirth)

I personally believe it was narrative, just not explicitly explained. Often apparently non-narrative works when explained by the director or writer make far more sense.
