Colour correcting the music video is a fiddly task and a half!
The footage is already difficult to handle. Filming with a high ISO provided as with the 90’s home movie vibe we were aiming for but also introduced a lot of grain to the video and threw the exposure way out sometimes. During colour correcting we want to keep our look but also minimise or at least not worsen the grain. I personally have not had a lot of experience using premiere pro to to colour grade so it was a bit of an adventure. With a few handy tips from Rohan (thanks Rohan) we managed to improve quite a few of our shots, retaining the colour palette we’d carefully tried to construct. One particularly handy technique we found for a lot of our shots was just lowering the exposure of the mid-tones. This in particular improved many of our shots noticeably.
Colour consistency was another issue I really wanted to focus on. During the four segments of the video we wanted to maintain a particular colour tone for each, often representative of the time of day it was intended to be. For example the sequence in which Conor heads home with all his party supplies we introduced a lot more yellow and orange to emphasis the end of day appearance while during the pool party sequence he added more pink, purple and blue for the chaotic party atmosphere we wanted to achieve.
Overall I was relatively happy for what we achieved as a team considering our lack of proper experience with the particular programme.
