Project Brief 1 Reflection

Commencing this project I was unsure from what angle I would approach the project. I started taking images of things I felt a connection with and realised these things tended to be individual items as opposed to spaces or the architecture of the house. Usually it was things that I myself had brought into the house, items I liked and arranged the way I wanted and liked. Some were objects others had placed into the house and I liked, often for purely aesthetic reasons.

This focus on objects I think stems from still living with a family (two parents and a sibling) and wanting to have an aspect of the house that is purely my own. As you get older the need for independence gets stronger and the want to have your personality reflected in your living space increases.

This could be considered to be a largely materialistic point of view, importance and value placed on objects. These objects however have importance when considering identity. Things that appear in my house (and by extension their placement) that I connect with are in direct correlation with myself. Having a very small room I often consider carefully what goes into it and how it’s arranged. The room is a direct representation of me. My room is connected to an equally small sunroom, which is also deemed by the family as my space. This space while still set-up by myself (including couch, bookshelf, plants, etc.) it is more accessed by others and reflects this in a more public display of self.

The sounds I chose to record are sounds heard most regularly throughout my house regardless of who is at home at any time. Heater turning on, kettle boiling, fish tank filtration etc. These sounds can be heard at least once a day or in the case of the fish tank, constantly.

Specific analysis of selected images:

This image is a close up of the fabric of a very comfortable armchair. The armchair itself (including the pattern) I’m not a fan of, however when isolated the patter, in my opinion, is quite nice. This can be considered a metaphorical representation of how I view my house. As a whole I don’t particularly connect with the house but when certain items/aspects are isolated I have a much more positive feelings towards them.

Similar to the above image, this fern is situated in the laundry, a place I feel relatively no connection with. However this fern and the other plants placed around I appreciate. When focused on it provides positive feeling to a space I otherwise have a neutral stance on.

The projector in my room enhances the dimensions of my room. Occupying an entire wall of the small space it immediately opens it up giving the appearance of a much greater space. Animating an otherwise blank wall with life and light. Retrospectively, I would have preferred to show this with the actual projection and how it increase the area.
