Music Video Production Post #1

Why am I here?

For years now I’ve wanted, in some way, to be involved in the production of moving image. I’ve considered lots of options. Animation, television, feature film, short film, art film etc. but the one thing that always inspired me was music. My favourite moments in film often come from the use of a song that I think makes the moment. When Cat People by David Bowie played in Inglorious Bastards or when Piece of My Hear by Janis Joplin played during an episode of Mad Men. These moments were special and lodged in my memory because of the chosen songs. When listening to music it’ll often inspire me and i’ll create my own scenes or visual imagery to accompany a song, especially while walking for some reason.

These things culminated in me deciding that music video’s was absolutely something I wanted to pursue. It was either that or make music and from what I can tell I have no musical talent at all. I remember when I was in the interview to get into this course at RMIT and they asked what aspects of media I was most interested in. I mentioned photography and film but I put particular emphasis on music videos. They asked me questions about my favourite music video director’s and particular styles and I couldn’t answer, I knew nothing. I knew what I liked but not why I liked it. That’s why I’m here, to gain the skills and knowledge that will help me to produce the work I want to, which is what I told the interviewer’s. I’ve produced a few short films, fashion video’s and event pieces but never made a music video which seems to have it’s own unique mode of production.

Ideally by the end of this course I would like to:
1. Have made a music video of a standard high enough to be used for official purposes
2. Develop the skills to be able to go out on my own and produce more work after the course has ended
3. Begin to discover/establish a video style that I can carry on and develop
4. Find out what it takes to make an impression through music video
