Assignment 1 Reflection

The environment in which our lives take place is referred to by Tim Ingold as “a domain of entanglement” (2011). This term serves as the centre of my reflection. All aspects of my development, my learning of entanglement as well as my small project, is entwined in this domain.

To begin with, my knowledge of entanglement has been immensely greatened through completing this project. I mentioned in my development the idea of revisiting past truths. Through this understanding, I have allowed myself to begin to investigate the broader entanglements of this issue but also the lives of inanimate objects which tie into this issue (in this case, hair ties). I realised that taking this step to acknowledge the broader entanglements stretches the widths of the domain of entanglement. That whilst it is useful to investigate the many entanglements, it is also necessary to limit the scope of entanglement. In relation to my piece on hair ties I could have taken many different approaches such as the ones mentioned in my development post. However, I chose to focus on the standard of life of those who use hair ties throughout their life. Put into words the idea is not simple and also by putting it into an audio-visual experience, it can stray even further from simplicity. A more simple way to approach this idea could have been through a poem accompanied by pictures. Or, a more straightforward visual experience. I felt that I did get lost in the domain. The reason for this is that I was curious about where my mind could take me after I felt enlightened learning about how entrenched entanglement is in this universe. I think that through the completion of this project I have learnt a lot about entanglement. I know now that whilst it is good to explore, I need to stick with one thing for the sake of doing it justice. As by doing it justice, I can allow my expression of a particular entanglement to become entangled in the life of someone else. So whilst my piece may appear over-complicated, it can still encite entanglement in the viewer as the shift from adolescence to adulthood is something we all face. Therefore I think that my piece is thought-provoking especially in the moments of pure audio as they allow the listener to imagine their own world. Moving forward from this I want to further develop what I am passionate about and so I must stick to one idea and not stray too far from it. I also have learnt that there are many different ways in which something can be presented and so I want to continue to experiment with the different affordances of media.
