Media 1 Lecture 10

MURDOCH ON THE DANCEFLOOR, YOU’D BETTER GO WATCH THE NEWS, DJ, OR HE’LL BURN YOUR GODDAMN HOUSE RIGHT DOWN
-Emily, India, Annie mae (a collaborative effort)

We involve ourselves, and use, with media institutions on a daily basis…not only for entertainment or information, but even when we are trying to procrastinate *lemme watch a few more viral videos*
It was interesting to bring it right back to the fundamentals of such institutions- what are they, how do they operate, what makes them unique?
My group were delegated the task of investigating community media as an institution.
Community media…
-is comprised mainly of broadcasting networks, papers and other publications
-is lower budget than commercial radio, tv, papers such as The Australian (I’ve got the Murdoch in me), Channel 10, Nova 100 etc
-is likened to a specific location or community, created from local material, issues, stories, rather than those on or national and international
-can promote local material such as music, art, business
-can contribute to the local economy by promoting such material (advertising)
-is accessible
-relies on community input

Stripping community media right back to its foundation, typical qualities and interactions allowed me to identify which institutions that I rergularly involve myself with… Instagram, Triple J (yes, it is a part of ABC but as its populatiry begins to grow and grow, it is kind of turning into its own institution- eg. Hottest 100, unearthed etc), Facebook (well, duh!), Google and the list goes on.

The most rewarding part of this weeks lecture, however, was Paul’s talk on the Work Attachment. It was good to gain some clarity on the whole idea of it, as it constitutes for a large part of our experience in completing the degree, as well as our marks/ability to pass.
I do have a big imagination, and I do like to dream…and although I may not always follow through on the more ambitious dreams, I feel like for this work attachment I want to- aiming high, being persistent and working hard to gain an attachment that is not only relative to the field I want to work in when I finish my course, but one that builds on my pre-existing skills and develops new ones. Paul mentioned the idea of completing a few work attachments, which sounds like a fabulous idea to me- if I gain a few attachments of different natures, I can build my skills and experience various jobs in a way that allows me to become a more rounded individual in terms of ability.
I want to start planning and applying now- I may be just another first year, but my passion for music and filmmaking, in conjuction with my prior qualifications, might get me somewhere pretty awesome- if you never try, you never know!

We all have dreams … so go on, catch your dreams
