No Light Doorway

No Light

I found it difficult to think of practical ideas for this specific sketch. I attempted to shoot outside at night, but then realised there needed to be some form of light source whether it be the moon or a light in the distance. I decided to shoot this doorway because the light that lightens up the frame is flat and dim so the light is not as obvious. The darkness in the room behind this doorway is eerie. I was contemplating shooting a dolly shot through the doorway, but my make-do dolly ideas were rough without the availability of my old skateboard. I decided to ask my sister to open the door slowly so there was some form of movement within the clip.

Window Light & Blind Shadows

Combination of light and shadow.

This clip of a window with venetian blinds in the foreground and a garden in the background shows the light from the sunny day seeping through the gaps. It also incorporates shadows created from the swaying foliage outside and the blinds them self. I shot this clip with the blinds on an angle because I thought the composition was more aesthetically pleasing and slightly more abstract. I like the contrast of colour and shape from darkness and angular shapes inside to brightness and organic shapes outside.

Afternoon Sunlight

Light

The sun light flickers through the leaves as the tree sways in the wind. The lens flare and natural bird chirping noises in the clip are tranquil. The colours are bright and the atmosphere in this shot is pleasant. Sun light may seem like an obvious choice for this clip, but it is aesthetically pleasing so I hope that makes up for it.

Passion Fruit Sponge Circle

Mum’s homemade passion fruit sponge brings me joy. It’s a cake I’m yet to succeed in baking myself, but that doesn’t stop me from succeeding in the consumption part. It’s perfect circular shape, golden brown colour and smooth spotted icing reminds of an dessert you would find in a Gourmet Traveller magazine which inspired me to shoot this clip from above, as is often seen in those glossy pages. This angle also presents the viewer with a flawless circle shape.

Lantern Circle

This solar powered lantern has been hung on my back decking for a number of years. It’s circular shape sits central in the frame and contrasts the greenery in the background. My house is mostly cream with grey trimmings, but these splashes of colour that hang and dangle from the beams add life and joy to our home.

Hula Hoop Circle

This weighted hula hoop was a present I gave my sister recently. Hula hooping has become quite an obsession of ours as of late. Perhaps it’s partly the nostalgia we feel when we practice keeping the hoop above our ankles, but I’d say it’s mostly an attempt to make exercise more enjoyable. I chose to shoot the hoop rolling across the frame and then (miraculously) land against the chair because I thought it would be easier to observe the circle shape from this angle. The slow roll across screen could also make a viewer wonder if someone’s hoop has escaped them.

Toast Pop Square

This new toaster has an impressive pop. It amused me one morning last week. I don’t like the perfectly square manufactured white bread, but my Dad loves it and he keeps a good stock in our freezer so if ever I run out of my preferred loaf, his brand does the job. I shot this from side on so the viewer gets a full view of the square shape.

Record Collection Square

These albums belong to my parents. I think they have pretty good taste in music. I probably think that because they raised me listening to some of these records. Although we don’t play vinyl regularly in our house these days, these records still have their place and won’t be thrown away anytime soon. They’re too sentimental. I shot them from above so the viewer can see the square shape. I shot close enough to the records so the viewer can observe the cover art.

Vegemite Bread Square

Vegemite on bread is a standard in my household, like many other Australian homes. My Mum smears it on this thick where as I prefer mine a little less covered. The square plate was the perfect size and shape for this slice. I shot this clip from above so the square shapes were in full view. Cutting the square bread into square quarters reminds me of childhood. I asked my Mum if she could remove a piece while I shot the clip. She did so, very slowly. It looks sneaky and amused us both.
