To Be Continued

Carrying on from our Monday class, we continued looking into the short French film, I’ll Catch The Next One. But this time, we were given the opportunity to discuss and create our own continuation of what happens after the woman gets off the train. And so, this post is dedicated to me simply sharing my take on what could have happened after.

This is the last thing we see before it cuts to a black screen.

The first thing that came to my mind after this last frame, is that it cuts to a wide shot (still in this angle) of the woman standing on the platform and still looking at the train that has now disappeared. It holds for a bit before cutting to another wide shot but from another angle where we see the back of the woman, and in the distance, we see another woman standing there in a similar position. And long story short, they basically meet and fall in love with each other instead.

Below is just a (very) short excerpt that I wrote:

She stands at the platform, looking into the distance of the dark tunnel. Not far from her, another woman stands in the platform in a similar position.

Cut to WOMAN 2’s face as she turns around and looks at WOMAN 1. They stare at each other. A small smile forms on Woman 2’s face.

So here, it’s assumed that another woman also got off the train and fell for the man’s skit. And yes, I am highly aware that I used a camera cue. Honestly, I am still experimenting with my writing. From scripts that I have read (courtesy of any links that No Film School finds and kindly shares with the world), it doesn’t hurt to add a camera or editing cue here and there. And I think that you can get away with it if it is absolutely necessary to use. And for me, the reason I added the cue was to break away from my vision of a wide shot of the two women standing on the platform and we can focus on Woman 2.

But of course, if this was an actual script that I would put out there, someone else would read it and may have a different interpretation of how the visuals might look like in there heads. So something that I would like to try and experiment with would be to write a script as if I was the only one reading it, and write it again as if other people would read it and compare the differences in my writing.
