Trying Times

Because we really were trying to get it together in time for our pitch presentation.

We met up with the writers and discussed the plan for the presentation and tried to flesh out the vision for the web series. But before we get to that, something that would have helped with the ‘vision’ part of our discussion was if the pilot was at least at a rough cut stage so we could all see where we were really at. However, it wasn’t edited yet and the entire pilot was edited during the class so we still didn’t get to see any of it. So tip for next time would be to have at least some part of an episode edited to see how we’re going aesthetically and storytelling.

But moving on from that, our ‘vision’ and the direction we were going to go from here on out was something we really needed to discuss in depth and get it ready for the presentation. As part of the production crew for the pilot (and the series overall), from what I gathered from the writers is that the series will have that dark comedy vibe. I mean, considering the characters they created and the  general outline of the story they have so far, it makes sense that it has dark comedy.

I also think that we’re going for The Office type of camera shots and angles. Not having watched this series in its entirety, but from the random few episodes that I have seen, it has more of a break-the-fourth-wall interview shots and prolonged shots – as in, holding the shot a couple of seconds longer to create an awkward atmosphere. I think the only thing we might struggle with are those shots where two characters are distant from each other and we change focus from one to the other in the background. Since we are using DSLRs, I find that it’s not as easy to do quick focus changes so we may have to really think about whether to use shots like this. But apart from that, we pretty much got most of our ideas in order.
