Play It Again

And let the filming … continue.

Last week, my group and I have begun filming for our short film assignment (and click here for a recap) which now brings us to our second week of production. We began the week by reviewing all the footage we had captured and did a somewhat rough cut of the opening and closing sequences. We were generally happy with the footage we had captured, especially considering we filmed a shot more than once to ensure we got it right. However, we also noticed some inconsistencies in terms of continuity in some of the shots and we needed to think about the shots before and after and visualised how the shot would affect these. We immediately knew that we had to reshoot them again to ensure consistency.

And we did.

We began our second day of filming by reshooting some of the shots we had decided on in order to maintain visual continuity. We then continued on to film the remaining scenes of the film. Though I must first make a positive note of how attentive my group and I were in regards to maintaining visual continuity. There were a couple of moments during our filming session where we needed to rethink about previously planned shots and ask ourselves if the shot makes sense in terms of where it fits in the scene that it’s in. And if the answer to that question was a ‘no’ or ‘not really’, then we had to think collaboratively and efficiently for another way to film it. This definitely made it easier for us when it came to reviewing the footage and doing a rough cut where we placed the shots together to see how they flowed together for the one scene.

We then received some feedback for the (very) rough cut we had of the film and the one point that we needed to put into place was that there was a lot of action happening but not enough reflecting. The backbone of the film was present but there were still pieces missing. We lacked visual content of the actor observing and reflecting internally, whether that be of her watching the other dancers or staring at herself in the mirror contemplating her next move. This is something that we need focus on as we enter into our third week of production/post-production.
