Smile For Me

Tuesday – 26 July 2016

This little boy sat in a pram while his mother preoccupied herself with her phone unaware of her son’s interaction with an old lady sitting not too far away from them on the carriage. The little boy looked at this lady with curious eyes, trying to make sense of what was actually happening. Though I couldn’t see the lady’s face, I can guess that she was attempting to make the little boy smile by making funny faces at him as her head would suddenly tilt and turn in her every attempt, abandoning the newspaper she had been reading.

The little boy then distraughtly faced his mother with concern as his arms reached for her, struggling as he was trapped by the belts of his pram seat. His mother, however, at first unaware of the interactions pulls out a bottle from the back of the pram and hands it to her son. She eventually realises that she was being watched by the lady smiling at the little boy who, likewise, stared back at her but instead with blankness in his face as he drank water from the bottle. The mother smiled back to the lady, which that lady took as a sign to continue with her endeavours, eventually making the little boy smile and point at her as he spoke to his mother with unconstructed words.
