Start Watching

It’s the end of my first week back at uni and I’ve already had to film something. This is quite the stark contrast from my first semester which was filled primarily with introductions and readings which I completely forget about the day after I read them. Obviously, these things are understandable considering that I’m still first a year at uni. This semester, I was fortunate enough to get my first preference in my studio selections and will be taking the Translating Observation studio for the next 12 weeks. Just from the original description of this studio that I read before I chose it, it was the one that stood out to me the most.

Why is that? Because it’s about creating films about the things that we see and feel without the need to necessarily contextualise or narrate it so much. And from the first class, I was given this same reassurance with what will take place in this studio and continued to look positively towards the coming weeks. I mean, during the first lesson, we were already asked to begin writing by reflecting about recent observations.

I was even more delighted at the fact that by our second class, we were able to do some (more) practical work by learning how to use a Sony EX3 camera and setting it up with its tripod. I was very keen to learn about this piece of equipment mainly because I’ve never used it before, or any cameras of similar design as this one, so I was definitely optimistic about learning about its operations.

From the first two classes, it was pretty clear what my goals are over the next couple of months. Firstly, to improve my writing skills. Secondly, to learn more about different types of filming equipment and be comfortable and confident in using them. And thirdly, to improve my skills as a filmmaker. And hopefully, by the end of this semester, I get to achieve these goals and possible even more that I didn’t know I could achieve.

I declare that in submitting all work for this assessment I have read, understood and agree to the content and expectations of the assessment declaration.
