This week’s workshop gave us the chance to regroup and share our ideas with our class. We had to give a rough presentation of our fourth project brief in terms of discussing what our topics our essays will be based on and any relevant findings. The topic for our group is Institution, in particular, Disney. It was interesting hearing other people’s views on Disney as an institution. For instance, one noted how currently, people are pushing for Frozen 2 to feature Elsa with a girlfriend. This shows the changing values of people and how this can be reflected by media institutions, and in this case, Disney’s power in reflecting particular values should they wish to.

One also noted a photographer who was banned from Disney World as she was suspected of exposing Disney’s operations. This reminded me of an article I found which discusses the operations of Disney World. It explains the corporation’s meticulous control and management of its theme parks to ensure that visitors get a particular experience upon their stay at Disney World. The measures that the Disney corporation takes to make sure that people don’t see their workers pick up rubbish or fix their rides is quite ash toning actually, as in to the point of people getting fined if they go to their restricted areas to see their behind-the-scenes action. The struggles of being the happiest place on Earth.
