Why recent fantasy movies are so appealing to audiences
In recent years, fantasy movies have attracted more and more people’s love, whether it is the well-known Harry Potter series, or new movies like Alice in Wonderland all have already won huge box office, and even launched a variety of peripheral products. The success of these fantasy movies is obviously not accidental, they must have the merits that other types of movies do not exist. Many people have a keen interest in why fantasy movies can be favored by so many audiences, and have launched a heated discussion on this issue. This research report will discuss why recent fantasy movies are so appealing to audiences through the relationship between the storyboards of fantasy movies and their original works, the shooting techniques and camera movements used in fantasy movies, and the camera coverage settings in fantasy movies.
The first crucial point is the relationship between the original works of fantasy movies and the storyboard of fantasy movies. Fantasy movies often have a huge worldview that is quite different from the real world, so when watching fantasy movies, the audience can temporarily get rid of the real world’s shackles ideologically and wander around in a world without rules such as the laws of physics. This is also a highlight of fantasy movies, the audience is willing to accept this extraordinary setting to meet their imagination and curiosity, but the paranormal world view does not mean that the world view can be recklessly fabricated, on the contrary, a good fantasy film often has a reasonable but full of imagination of the world view (Morton 2016). However this worldview, which combines rationality and imagination, is actually so difficult to construct. So many of the crews who wanted to make fantasy movies set their sights on fantasy fictions. In fact, many fantasy movies are changed from novels of the same name, such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Alice in Wonderland (MasterClass Staff 2021). These novels already have a complete and grand world view, and the plot and content of these novels are also very attractive, which played a great role in the drawing of storyboards during film production. This means that as long as the crew tries their best to restore the plot of the novel, they can get a movie of excellent quality. This adaptation method will not only provide a lot of help during the filming process, but also have certain advantages in business and box office. For example, many loyal fans of original novels will become audiences of movies and increase the box office in order to watch how the film crew turns the world of text novels into a world that can be seen by the naked eye. In general, the relationship between the storyboards of fantasy movies and their original works can be regarded as an enlightening relationship. The storyboards of fantasy movies construct a complete and imaginative worldview by restoring their original works, so as to achieve the purpose of attracting audiences.
The second significant factor is the camera movements and shooting techniques used in fantasy movies. The reason why a fantasy movie is called a fantasy movie is that in addition to its fantastic worldview, it also needs to give the characters a variety of unique abilities, of which magic is the most common and very practical example. There is no magic in real life, so if people want to restore the magic elements that appear in the storyboards, the crew needs to use some special techniques to achieve the effect of the characters in the movie using magic. During the shooting of Harry Potter, a large number of special effects and artificial mechanisms were used to achieve the effect of magic used by the actors in the movie (Gilbey 2011). These shooting techniques are extremely clever and scientifically restore the magic elements described in the storyboard, and form a feeling that magic is real, which also enhances the rationality of magic in fantasy movies. Regrettably, the expression of magic in the Harry Potter films was not the best. Due to technical limitations at the time, the crew used more performance of the target being cast, instead of adding more special effects to the casting process to make the casting process look more exciting. However, the clever prop design and special effects of the crew still make the Harry Potter series of movies still recognized by people until now. Camera movement in fantasy movies is also an interesting point in movie shooting. Quidditch games in Harry Potter and the scenes of people riding horses in The Lord of the Rings are all very fast moving shots. However, these shots were taken very smoothly in the movie, which also reflects that the directors of Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings have a very high understanding and control of camera movement. The reasonable camera movement method used in these shootings also enables the audience to feel the tension and excitement brought by the movement while watching the movie, without the dizziness and discomfort caused by the movement. On the whole, the novel and interesting shooting methods used in fantasy movies and the silky camera movement can continuously stimulate the nerves of the audience in the movie and make the audience feel excited. This may be one of the reasons why the audience loves fantasy movies.
The third staple element is the camera coverage settings in fantasy movies. For fantasy movies with a lot of scene transitions, multi-camera and multi-angle shooting is almost commonplace, which also makes camera coverage a major problem in fantasy movie shooting. The shooting of big scenes in fantasy movies has extremely high requirements for camera coverage. For example, the crew of the fantasy movie The Lord of the Rings spent a lot of time and manpower when shooting the classic scene of the Battle of the Helm, and shooting this scene in a variety of different positions and angles (Balm 2019). The final filming of this scene in the movie was only ten minutes, but the entire crew even used a few days to shoot this scene. It can be seen that the director of the Lord of the Rings has taken care of the camera coverage in the movie. This scene has indeed lived up to expectations and has become one of the most famous scenes in the Lord of the Rings movie series, which has won the love and support of a large number of audiences. There are also many large scenes in the Harry Potter series that used multi-camera and multi-angle shooting (Pulver 2010). For example, the death of Harry used this camera coverage method to show the details of the expressions of different people in the war and the sadness of the scenes at that time. Excellent fantasy movies can create an epic feeling in a large scene through complex but just right camera coverage, so that the audience can feel the shock of war in the fantasy world when watching, thereby satisfying the audience’s visual experience. This is also a very attractive point of fantasy movies.
In general, it is not accidental that fantasy movies can be loved by the audience. Its excellent source of storyboards, unbelievable shooting technology, silky camera movement, and complex but reasonable camera coverage are all reasons why today’s excellent fantasy movies can attract so many viewers.
