This project has certainly been the most illuminating for me so far. I am not sure how I feel about my final product but I am proud of the work I put into it. Of the many lessons I have taken away from this project, the main three would be to one, always check (and then double check) your filming equipment to make sure what you see is what you will actually end up with. Lesson two, If you don’t know – look for a tutorial and lesson three, make time for mistakes.
The first big issue I encountered with this project I documented in After The Interview. During the first part of filming my interview, my camera was pretty out of focus – you can see this is the one shot I used. For whatever reason, to my naked eye, the focus seemed perfect but luckily I did manage to catch it (but did not realize exactly how bad it was) a few minutes into the interview.
The second and third lesson I definitely learned through the same mistakes. Though I do think I managed my time well for this project I do wish I had planned in the case of a mishap. For example, planned time in case of a need for a reshoot (which would have been handy for the first part of the interview). I wish I had planned more time not only for shooting mistakes but for lessons as well. I relied heavily on watching tutorials for this project due to my lack of editing experience. I certainly did not realize how long it can take to work through some of them when one (me) is not completely comfortable with the interface. In relation to this, I wish I had immediately jumped to the almost unlimited amount of tutorials out there rather than playing around with the editing myself for quite some time.
I also do feel that I accomplished a lot of what I set out to do with this project. I do feel I created a successful narrative with the time I had to work with. Cutting so much of the interview was certainly a painful process but in the end, I do feel like I was able to trim down the beef to create a lean and clean narrative. I also am happy with how the overall aesthetic of the piece turned out. My main Inspiration was the intro to HBO’s How To Make It In America. I hadn’t watched this show in a few years but while I was listening to Conor speak I recalled the plot of the show as it deals with the successes and challenges one faces while trying to achieve some form of greatness.
