Room With A View Feature Ideas:
Some of my Feature Ideas:
The Politics of Black Hair
This may be a bit of an ambitious Idea for a feature but I do feel fairly confident in my knowledge on this topic as I have read a lot of books that cover this topic in depth (Roxane Gay’s Bad Feminist, Don’t Touch my Hair by Phoebe Robinson etc..) As well as consuming a lot of other media that discusses it. It has also recently been in the press a lot as Black Panther had come out as they explicitly only showed natural hair in the movie. There was also a recent article in the conversation about this topic by a woman who teaches at Vic Uni who could be a possible interviewee.

Cannabis and Capitalism
As 4/20 was last week I read an article on VOX (https://www.vox.com/2014/4/19/5624560/what-is-420-marijuana-legalization) that discusses how cannabis legalization in the states has turned cannabis from a symbol of the counter-culture and anti-establishment thought into just another corporate commodity. I think it would be interesting to explore the developments in cannabis legalization in Australia and see how it is projected to become part of the economy in a similar way to Canada and the States or if it is possible for it to remain outside of capitalisms grasp.
Political Office and Celebrity
Is There anything inherently wrong about a ‘celebrity’ holding public office? Cynthia Nixon former star of Sex and the City would say no according to a recent interview on Stephen Colbert https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HohD8NVW3M. Though many people would say yes after the election of Donald Trump. There is nothing really new about tv and film personalities holding office in the states Ronald Regan, The Terminator, and even Jerry Springer have all held public office. And this is not exclusive to the states: https://www.sbs.com.au/topics/life/culture/article/2016/11/11/16-surprising-stars-turned-politicians-around-world. I don’t know who we could speak to on this but I think it could make a great feature with a bit more research 🙂
