Semiotics

I mentioned in my previous post on this weeks reading on my struggle to understand semiotics and one of the readings for this week. I was happy to learn that others also thought that the reading had been fairly dense.

While discussing semiotics and textual analysis in class today one student brought up the example of a swastika. Within in eastern religions it’s regarded as a symbol of peace and in western culture due to its association with The Third Reich and Nazi Germany it conjures up the feeling of hate, racism, and genocide. This all links back to the importance of context within textual analysis and semiotics as well.

While reading an article in Vanity Fair today about the final episode of The People v. OJ Simpson I came across another example of this concept.

The sign in this example are the glasses that by this analyzation means more than just the fact that Robert Kardashian 1 has vision issues. But rather, that he is experiencing a change in his life. The glasses now signify his understanding that he has helped a man get away with murder 2

  1. Yes, of THE Kardashians
  2. If I spoiled the ending for you I don’t care….. You should have already known how it was going to end
