All around us - Media 1 Lecture 2

All around us – Media 1 Lecture 2

Melbourne Central from Hannah Tepoorten on Vimeo.

At the end of the lecture today we, the class, were tasked with going to different areas of Melbourne and recording what kinds and how much of media we encountered there. The group I was put into headed to Melbourne Central.

As we were in a shopping centre the amount of media we encountered was vast :

  1. Advertisements , on the ground, above us on screens, in front of us on shop windows, and on more screens
  2. Interactive media in the form of the direction screen
  3. Music playing in the background
  4. Branding and messages on bags and t shirts
  5. People on the phones, computers, etc….

Very quickly while observing the people shopping and heading for the trains Josie and The Pussycats popped into my head, particularly, the scene below. If you are unfamiliar with this masterpiece of a movie here is a synopsis.

Now I am not saying we are all being completely brainwashed and have 0 free will, but, we are constantly consuming media and being influenced by it in ways we may not always realize. Big screens with large advertisements may not be the most subliminal way of making a point, but they are constant. Branding of shops to make us think one brand is more on trend then another and there fore more likely to purchase it. The other big correlation between that scene in the movie and the scene I filmed today is the omnipresence of media and the vast amount we consume. Everywhere I looked someone was on there phone or computer. Many of whom were creating media by taking a picture and then using social media to share there experience.
