  1. WEEK#3 Lectorial This post is about my reflection on week 3’s lectorial. There were 3 guests for that lectorial, Anne Lennox, Kyla Brettle, and Paul Ritchard. It’s a lecture about copyright, exploring the unknown, and production and serendipity. I quite like this lectorial, and I’ve known something new.

  1. WEEK#4 Lectorial I was really excited about this lectorial, which focused on theory and practice, and editing. I was quite engaged in this lectorial, and it gave me a lot of new ideas on producing media stuff and editing.  http://www.mediafactory.org.au/haien-wang/2015/06/03/week4-lectorial/
  2. WEEK#5 Workshop This post is about my thought of my project brief 2 after watching other classmates’ videos. And it also involves my feeling about the practical work-filming with borrowed equipment.

  1. WEEK#9 Lectorial   This week’s lectorial talked about audience. This post focuses on a question mentioned in the lectotial: who cares about audience. And I give my response and feeling to this question.

Final reflection

What you’ve learned?

Through this course, I’ve learnt so much. I had no knowledge of media before, everything was new to me. After this semester’s study, I get familiar with media study. I’ve learnt the following things:

  1. Editing

Editing seemed an impossible thing to me before I took this course. I never imagined I could edit a video by myself. I had no idea of iMovie, Premiere and AfterEffect. But now, I know how to edit video and audio. I’ve learnt how to cut videos and put them together, how to use different effects to transit from scene to scene, and the mot important thing- how to make meaningful edit. I could say that there’s a great progress of my editing.

  1. Filming (equipment and shooting skills)

To be honest, I’ve never made a formal video by myself before. I used to shoot some short video by my smartphone, like 10 seconds or something like that. This is my first time to shoot a video, which is more than 1 minute. It’s quite different from shooting before. For the project we did during this course, we should think and organise what we are going to shoot, and how we shoot it. In addition, I knew how to use different equipment, like zoom, digital camera and tripod.

  1. Collaboration

Collaboration is quite important not only for this semester but also for the whole degree, even for our whole life. From project brief 3, we were asked to work with others. We made a media portrait of someone, and we finished a group project with our group members. I learnt how to work with others, how to understand others and how to accept different ideas.

How you learn?

  1. Online

Because I have no experience about media thing (like editing and filming), I have to learn relevant knowledge online to catch up with others. I’ve watched some videos on YouTube, where there are many useful tutorial videos. When watching videos, I will take notes. I have a notebook for editing tips. Also, after watching them, I will practise many times until I get familiar with it.

  1. RMITV

I’ve joined RMITV, which is a very interesting and useful club. I took part in a TV show filming which is called F-Word. I was the director assistant. I knew a lot of thing there, like what do DA do, and how to organise and prepare for the shooting.

  1. Lectorial and Workshop

I found that the lectorials of media one are quite basic and interesting, which is quite for a beginner like me. I knew a lot of new things from lectorials, like remixes, serendipity, and narrative. I will Google some new terms I didn’t know, and get further information about it online. Workshop is a god chance for us to practise.

  1. Classmates

Because some of my classmates have more experience of media, so I am very willing to learn from them. For example, I have learnt how to editing audio from my group member Jack. It’s a good idea that always communicate with your classmates and learn from them.

What you found most challenging in the course?

As an international student, language is the biggest problem undoubtedly. At first, I couldn’t understand the lectorial, which involved a great number of professional words. In addition, I felt nervous to talk to people or talk to the public. However, after several talks with Dan and Rachel, I feel much better. I will write down some words I can’t understand and then Google it or ask someone else like classmates or tutors.

Another challenging is writing reflection. I haven’t wrote this in my country, and I don’t know what should I write. Plus I’m not good at English writing, I feel frustrated when I’m writing reflections. I would like to know what should we focus on when we write reflections.

What you discovered about your own creative practice?

After doing these four projects, I found that I’m quite interesting in narrative. That could be more organised. I prefer to make a realistic video than an abstract one. I’ve been tried both of them, but I couldn’t really make an abstract video. It’s quite hard to identify abstract. I guess I will continue trying different styles in the future degree.
