The Whale

So it took me 6 weeks but I finally got onto DocPlay today and decided to watch the first documentary that my eye was drawn to. After falling in love with Blackfish so many years ago I went straight to the documentary about a Killer Whale. I focused hard in the first 5 minutes on how the scene was set and how the story began. I noticed a few things that stood out to me, first the use of sound effects. The opening shot was very basic and pretty much exactly what you would expect it to be, a black screen with underwater ocean noises, then a quote about animals appears, then it goes straight to magnificent scenery of the ocean in coves with mist. The narration begins and it becomes obvious quite quickly that they are talking about a killer whale.

I thought the most interesting thing I thought was how the whale noises are incorporated in the narration to relay emotion. After saying that Luna lost her entire family you hear pained and distraught sounding whale noises. It really helps bring the story to life and I thought it was genius.
