INTRODUCTION TO H2Nzoom
Figure: conversation
Field: input of cafe ambient noise
Ground: snippet of construction noise
Challenges / Problems:
– there were hardly any quiet locations
– equipment records sound only if held parallel to the ground
– had difficulty locating files in equipment
– while talking, I tend to be unaware of “unwanted” noise
Success:
– when we conversed in a quiet setting
– when we are quiet in a noisy setting to record “pure” field sound
– adjusted setting levels easily
– before recording, tested mic gain in relation to distance from us and our speaking voices so maintaining consistency is relatively easy
Overcoming Obstacles:
– due to locations, we could not get a “clean” recording. for example, in the interview clip I used(held at classrooms corridor), footsteps and door swinging can be heard. so I incorporated cafe ambient sound to recreate our environment. now footsteps and door swinging have been appropriated.
Learning Points (mic technique):
– always test sound, gain in relation to speaking voice, before actual recording
– depending on type of mic, its position can affect volume and quality of recording
– be more aware of “wanted” and “unwanted” sounds
