Next stage shooting exercise
Having the opportunity to shoot a script that is created by another individual, is a task that gets me really excited about filmmaking and cinematic storytelling. The next stage shooting exercise was an exciting way to approach this process and work in groups to function as an online crew. Each of us had designated roles and I initially took on the first assistant director role, and later the camera assistant to call the shots and announce the scenes.
After completing the first crew shoot, our group had a consultation with Paul in which he suggested that we should focus on being more deliberate, rather than shooting for the purpose to gain sufficient coverage. He also explained that we should concentrate on the framing and angles of our shots, which I agree that they needed some improvement. I decided to then create a Shot List for our group so we could follow a more carefully planned checklist, that also takes into account Paul’s suggestions of including POV shots. Overall, I am very pleased with the work Fraser, Fifi, Liam and I have completed as a team, and it is evident that our filmmaking skills and abilities have improved when watching back to our first crew shoot. Particularly, it signifies how being more intentional and deliberate with both the planning and production process of filming, can produce significant outcomes and results.

In addition to this, I also decided to have a go at this exercise individually and act the first scene from ‘The Book’ script. I focused on including some POV shots and also concentrated on experimenting with different ways to utilise the space of my surroundings. In particular, I included a shot where I had placed the camera outside of my bedroom window, and also opened up the scene by shooting the reflection of my mirror. I was aiming to see whether the meaning and feeling of the scene could change, based on the change of location and utilisation of the space.
