In the introduction to his book ‘Protocol: How Control Exists After Decentralisation’, Galloway writes about the decentralisation of the internet and what this means for media makers and controllers. The reading was quite complicated in it’s language, as a lot of technical terms were used which I didn’t completely understand.
The main ideas I managed to discern were:
– The internet is non-hierarchical and horizontal
– It is a peer-to-peer system, whereby machines can talk to other machines
– Protocol is how systems for computer networks are managed (basically a number of rules which establish technical standards)
– DNS is a hierarchical structure that all Web traffic must submit to in order to access the Internet
Some of this was interesting to read, however I think I would have to do a lot more background research on DNS, IETF, CSS and so on if I wanted to truly understand everything.
