My hairdresser shares his thoughts on networked media

Call me ignorant, but I was under the impression that very few people over the age of 50 truly understand the power of social media. Social media is the modern incarnation of face to face networking. Gone are the days of passing someone’s contact details on to someone else. Gone are the days of “catching up to debrief”. I have welcomed the new wave of “I’ll follow you on instagram”.

Is social media the new business card?

My hairdresser, who falls into the aforementioned age bracket, expressed to me without prompting just how important he feels “social networking” is. His ideas reflect my initial thoughts on what it is to be “networked”. For example, someone of influence posts on social media about a particular brand or service. Someone else sees the post, makes a purchase from the brand, then shares it. The cycle continues. Social networking, and good old fashioned word of mouth, can live harmoniously. One isn’t necessarily more important than the other, but when used together they become a force with power beyond comprehension.
