From the beginning of this course I was looking forward to delving into copyright and specific copyright laws. While having a basic understanding I knew that there was a lot I didn’t know. I was wary when I was doing some projects and people would say “be careful of copyright”. Although I knew what it was, without knowing the specific laws how was I to know if I broke them or not? So I was thankful when we discussed copyright in our lecture this week. It can be confusing at times, because there is different laws depending on the country and other conditions of when you can use things done by other artists. I thought the short film Copyright! was an excellent engaging way to convey information about the laws. While watching the beginning of the film when people were asking each other “do you know what copyright is?” I remember a conversation I had with a fellow classmate that went exactly like that. So I found it funny but also really easy to relate to.
It was such a fun way to teach us, which makes me glad to be in a media degree. I feel like we have the opportunity more so than any other type of degree to learn in such diverse ways. So something seemingly boring like copyright law becomes fun and one of my favourite parts of the lecture.
Whilst rewatching the video again on youtube, I followed a link to another video that talked about copyright. This video done by Rob and Jonas’ Filmmaking Tips, talks about copyright in relation to filmmaking. It talks about what you can and can’t use as a filmmaker and how to access “free stuff” to enhance your film. I really enjoyed watching their short series as well. Although they repeated a lot of the same points, they did in more of a vlogging style which I found easier to follow and take in the information. As they spoke in relation to film I found it particularly interesting as that’s where my interests lie.
What I learnt from this was that finding even more resources then what is given to us is hugely beneficial. Which was kind of a DUH moment.. Although it has become more clear to me now more than ever because some information may be presented in a media form that speaks specifically to an individual. While a topic might be hard or boring if you find the right resource it might use media is such a way that you find it easy and interesting. Yet another way in which I think media makes education so much easier and accessible for everyone. I’m looking forward to further resource hunting for each topic that comes up in our classes, hopefully finding something new and different each time!
Until then,
