VOLKSWAGEN UPDATE

I feel like we are on the right track with Project Brief 4. We have a website in the works, have divided up areas and have been throwing around a bunch of ideas for the content aspect.

We are all for the idea of showing people advertisements (print and commercials) and recording their interpretations. Dan suggested taking a Gogglebox approach, showing people advertisements and filming their reactions. There is sure to be a diverse range of responses, emphasising the highly interpretable nature of text. My only concern though, is how riveting the responses will be and if this will quantify as exciting viewing. There’s only one way to find out, by actually doing it. So I think this is probably the next step.

Expanding on Dan’s idea, I want to convert the reactions into text and then construct a print advertisement with Shannon using the text as tag lines/slogans. I want to retain the audio from the commercial and have it playing in the background while viewing the constructed print advertisement. Depending on who we ask to view the videos, we could discuss the results in reference to cultural upbringing. A fair portion of reading completed so far has been on the topic of cultural interpretations so I would like to get this point across in our material.

Some advertisements I am considering using are:

This has the great YouTube comment of: “Buy a jetty and you too could be a wanker!”

You cannot trust every old lady. But you can trust every Golf.

What a fearless old lady. I have an article relating to gender studies in interpreting text which would be useful here.

This commercial is just brilliant. The use of multimedia and pop culture references is a genius way of selling a product.

The thing with Volkswagen is that everything they produce is of a very high creative standard. We can thank DDB advertising agency for this, who have been responsible for a large amount of VW commercials since the 60s. I’ve got a few readings identifying DDB as responsible for their success, so this will no doubt be explored.

RECORDING SOUND…

Field recordings are always a bit tricky. Right in the middle of the city there is so much interference which often ruins the quality of the recording. To get a great recording, you have to be in a very quiet space, which is why band recordings are done in sound-proof booths most often. My experience with sound goes back a fair way, but I still have problems with recording fluctuating sound sources. I am fidgety with the gain knob which goes a long way to wrecking an otherwise nice recording.

Many of the sounds captured in todays session were full of noise and unwanted background sounds. I ended up looking at the list of sound files as potential samples for tracks. At some stage I will post a recording of a song which uses these samples in one form or another.

The thing with sampling is, you can use almost anything and make something sound good (subjectively) with it. Take for example these videos that have been doing the rounds recently on the webs. Read article here.

Now I’m not saying that I like the ‘Melbourne Bounce’ sound (it infuriates me), but I can respect the fact that they are using anything and everything to make music. Good on ’em I suppose.

PROJECT BRIEF 1 – LO-FI SELF PORTRAIT

“A noise annoys an oyster, but a noisy oyster annoys an oyster more”

This is a tongue twister that my dad’s mate Tony taught me when our families went to Wilson’s Promontory all those years back. Thinking of it now takes me straight back to memorable Summers.

This sound clip is of the daily routine of buying groceries to get by day to day.

The second sound recording is of myself playing piano and singing some lyrics I was messing around with at the time. I will never give up playing music.

This photo summarises my opinion of how restricted the Australian Music Industry is. With such a small population and large land mass, It’s hard to establish yourself as a professional musician – almost a sacred profession…

Which has led me to consuming music at parties. This photo is more though about the emptiness that I have felt recently since my housemate moved back to Singapore. This was his last gig. From now, his music will continue to play, but he will not be present.

I think I am quite a sharing person, which is certainly necessary in any sharehouse. Bread makes up a lot of my meals. I am poor.

This is my view walking home each night through the back alley. I lost my keys recently and haven’t been proactive about getting another cut.

The smoke represents my often smokey/unpredictable nature. Sometimes good and sometimes bad…
