Another week of blogging is upon us, and honestly I still don’t really understand a lot of the content in this course- which is becoming incresingly daugnting as the mix media assignments due date draws ever closer.
As usual, I have read some of my peers blog posts in the attempt to obtain some understanding of what is going on.
This week, Carli provided the goods.
She wrote about the Symposium in reference to Adrian’s post – so really we have some blogception going on.
Basically, the Symposium covered last weeks readings and the key ideas from both. Here’s a basic overview:
Barabási:
“The theory of phase transitions told us loud and clear that the road from disorder to order is maintained by the powerful forces of self-organisation and is paved by power laws.”
– Power Laws do not serve as a characteristic of a system, but rather stand as a definer of organisation within the system. This is evident in the shift from unorganised networks, to the refined system where no single node is the same as another. Instead they form together to create an instrinsic scale.
Anderson:
I really liked the quote Carli picked out for her post;
‘We are stuck in a hit driven mindset – we think that if something isn’t a hit, it won’t make money and so won’t return the cost of its production’. ‘…“misses” usually make money, too. And because there are so many more of them, that money can add up quickly to a huge new market.’
Those smaller artists may not create huge revenue- but the sure do create volume!
