My mum Barbara is a school teacher. Has been all her life, and often has complaints about the way things are taught in schools.
She is working at a low socio economic school at the moment, and teaches many year 6’s who read and write at a grade 1 level. It’s important to note that these kids have come to Australia from worn torn countries as refugees, some were even born in detention centres.
So when NAPLAN testing comes along, things hit the roof, these kids get horrible marks against other students their age, but their personal struggles and set backs are not considered.
Not all kids can be classed in a single category as a Year 1 or Year 6, some kids will always fall either side of the lines of conformity.
Old school teaching and testing techniques are not adequate for the current climate of schooling, maybe a change is needed?
This topic kinda links to another blog post I’ve written.
