Sharing is Caring, Amirtie?

The reading for week 02 covered all things COPYRIGHT. My initial thought process? Bare with me here,

1) All I can think about is that add that used to play on VCR’S before the movie. It’s not even about copyright!

2) AHHHH! The one asking all those scary statements like, ” you would’t steal a car!”, was the Copyright warning. Man that add was full on. Here’s me an 8 year old trying to watch Shrek and I have moral dilemmas being thrown at me.

3) Wait, no that was about Piracy. But still, thats basically the same as Copyright?

4) Copyright still scares me. I cringe at the thought of Police knocking at my door because I shared a photo without acknowledging it’s creator or failing a uni assignment because I didn’t source a photo.

5) Creative Commons. Hey this is a cool video. I wonder how they do all those cool drawings while some old guy speaks about….Felicia! concentrate.

Alright, so now you have been on the crazy roller coaster ride of thoughts, I suppose you want to know what this Creative Commons Business is all about?

Well back to point 3^, Copyright is stealing. Wether it be a movie, image, song. Someone else created it and without correctly adhering to copyright regulation, you are making  it you’re own

Take pictures on the internet. It’s pretty upsetting to think someone spent a mountain of time planning, taking, editing, and for someone else to rip it off, add a really cool caption in order to get heaps of likes  and pay no acknowledgement to that images creator. But it happens all the time, and yes I have done it to.

But this is why Creative Commons Licensing is so cool. A variety of copyright licences, allows creators to openly give access to their work and they can decided how broad the use of the image is. The multiple licences place differing levels of ownership on the image, you can go crazy editing some images, distribute and credit others, while some must remain the untouched.

I suppose Creative Commons Licensing has really opened doors for budding website designers, bloggers, movie makers etc. to access work they can use, and understand the extent of which they can do so. This format of copyright licensing allows rise for an online network where work can be shared and exposed fairly. As long as you credit the owner of the work, you’re doing everyone a big favour. Everybody is feeling the love!

See why I’m so scared of Police?
