Our soundscape’s subject is a kitchen, to connect the kitchen and ontology I need to focus on separated sound of kitchen. As Miles mentioned that the kitchen is empty in a long time, the sound will be rich when people stay in the kitchen. Pay attention to the empty kitchen, what sound will still exist while nobody use it.
Today is the due day of our project one, the noticing 2. I think that my group members are very co-operated, and the job done well.
It is a busy week but I finally competed the reading before Thursday. Oh I said that I will improve my reading methods to help me get fully understanding of reading. So this week , the chapter two of Ian Bogost’s book that I have read more than twice. Unfortunately, I don’t think I completed understand what Ian Bogost want to explain and express about the Ontology. That’s no problem, we gonna keep talk about the ontology in today’s studio. The good news is I think I can use or understand ontology to our project.
Also, there was a good news that our co-operated students in Germany have their blogs. I can’t stop my curious to read what happen to their class and study. What’s funny, I don’t understand German so I need to translate it by google translate.
Maybe those students will have more conversation with us on blog?
In the back of the chapter, Ian Bogost mention visual ontographs, I can’t understand the example he took. ‘François Blanciak’s speculative, paradigmatic architectural theory Siteless’, this example makes me confused. What exactly Ian Bogost want to explain clearly with this example?
Thanks to my group mate Joel Delamar, he is the sound editor in our group. He done the sound edit work already. We all hear the soundtrack, it was really good. But there are still some small mistakes. Like a part of the soundtrack is the sound of boiling water, the volume is too high. The whole soundtrack is only 55 seconds, not one minute enough. A great part of our soundtrack is staff’s sound, lacking human’s speaking sound.
Since last Thursday, we edit and edit our script of the soundtrack, we kept to rich the script, details in details. To Tuesday, Nina borrowed microphone from school and recorded the list of sound of script. Good jobs everyone.
What I learn today?
Today’s class is really helpful, Professor talked lots of information and knowledge about the understanding of Ian Bogost’s book and ideology. I arrived late, so missed the first 30 mins. I will talk about the knowledge and information that leaved me a deep impression.
For example: what can sound recorder/camera/editor do to make a film? What machine can do? I agree that in lots of essay we need to discuss that what’s the meaning of something. In this case, the essay and the content will be sublime to some extent. But we need to think back that what do they do, which helps us to do practice, not the ideology discussion. What writing do? What editing can do？ Writing is telling a story, then editor is work about relationship in time, based on color and others things. Like me, what I can do in our soundtrack project? The subject of our project is a room, then we chose kitchen. Then, what the staff in the kitchen can do, what sound they can make? To think about these questions can really help us to rich our soundtrack.
Subject: A Room
There we will have our important first project in the coming week, and essay will due in the week after next week.
Now, in this blog, I am going to discuss three aspects to improve my study in this semester, to achieve my goals.
#1 Improved study methods
In the last few weeks, my study methods are: pay a attention to class to get important part, take notes when I am reading (Bad method), and update blog about something I notice and image. Then I will change the reading method that I used, this is a stupid method as Professor Miles said, we can’t take note at first time we read the readings. That wastes time and energies, seriously. In the coming weeks and readings, I will roughly read at the first time, then deeply read and research online for better understanding of readings. Keep to pay more attention to class. Keep update blogs, compared to before, I want to rich my blogs, making my blog includes more content across many areas. I’d like to spend the 10 hours (out of class studying time) on blog.
#2 Set targets
Although I am not that self-confident, I still want to get high score, you know, HD is the perfect result I really want to have. So set this as my final important targets. Before I arrive that targets, starting with details. #1 Well communication with group members, brave to share ideas in every meeting and discussions. #2 Competed the first project with our great encourage.
#3 What I done well.
Think about myself, firstly I updated at least five posts a week in the last few weeks. Secondly, I completed reading and took notes after the first reading. Thirdly, for understanding unknown ideologies and knowledge I got from reading and class, I will do research to rich myself. Then, until now, I participated in every class. Keep these.
When I have spare time, I’d like to practice my writing on copybook (for calligraphy). The content of my copybook is Tao Te Ching that is the original book of Taoism, and published in the late 4th century BC. Laozi who is the ideologist of Taoism, in other words, he insisted Naive Dialectic.
The translation in Chapter 5:
Heaven and Earth are impartial;
they treat all of creation as straw dogs.
The Master doesn’t take sides;
she treats everyone like a straw dog.
The space between Heaven and Earth is like a bellows;
it is empty, yet has not lost its power.
The more it is used, the more it produces;
the more you talk of it, the less you comprehend.
It is better not to speak of things you do not understand.
The ancients used to treat the sky as the master of the world, and often endowed with personality and religious meaning. However, Laozi (the ideologist) didn’t believe that, in his opinion, the sky has its own objective mode of operation, there is no mercy. So sage (or politician) doesn’t need to be mercy to public, imitate the nature to do noting to administer a country, society and community.
PS: Seriously, I just agree that the world doesn’t have mercy, but I am not totally agree that politician do noting to the society, let it go as what the society wish. If issues happen, they have to in charge. Regarding to how to administer a community, society or a country, I am more interested in Mohism, its Mohist logic is the first logic system in ancient China, one of the three classical logic systems in the world.
What qualities did you notice that matters?
I will say this in two parts, one is about the judgement comment paper, the other one is watching the videos. To be honest, I am not that good at this kind of comment, although I do think there are something need to be improved and changed. But I think that maybe this is the personality they have. Anyway, when we are responsible for the comment paper, we need to be serious to the paper, because they are looking forward this. The second part is about when we are watching videos, keeping quite and no judgement during the watching process. I think we all done very well.
What feedback would you give your own work?
Of course, the thing that disappointed me most is the soundtrack. I can’t hear it clearly either most of my classmates. Because of the low voice, most of them can’t give a current comment. Except this, the next one is about the copyright. I have to say that all the images and videos I used are from the website CC Search. Next time if I gonna use the images, videos or music from this website I will add the resources of those at the end of the video.
Since we started the class, we enjoyed everyone’s video. We have a paper to judge everyone’s video, writing down our comment to help each other to improve.
About my video, I have no idea what is going on with the audio, the soundtrack. When I edited the video in edited room, even with my laptop, the voice is loud enough to hear clearly. Sad, the sound is really low, and many of my classmates did write down on the paper.
