‘Six Thinking Hats’ was my first blog post reflecting on a workshop activity in tutorials. Using the Edward De Bono’s exercise was a wonderful introduction to learning how to critique our work in a productive and positive way. Each student presented their materials for PB 1 and the rest of us commented on their effectiveness and ability to represent something relevant to our media self-portraits. This was the beginning of group critiques, discussion and presentations.

‘Saying Something about Someone’ is a post reflecting on a classmates PB 3. The materials and editing techniques other students were using was impressive and the presentations of each students work helped me structure my own PB 3 after watching the their PB2’s. I looked at the way they had gathered materials, used sound, edited footage and what they were representing about themselves, to inform how I approached my PB 3. The PB 3’s that I thought were most effective where the ones that allowed me to feel close to the person being portrayed. Alex’ portrait of his friend Zoe captured her persona as well as her vulnerable inner world. I found it very moving.

‘We Decided not to Die’ was a wonderful lecture where Daniel focused on what was narrative and non-narrative. By showing us this powerful short film and asking us to list what was narrative and non-narrative about it, I started to think about how much is already inherently in my subconscious as a media maker. Where do I get my ideas from about narrative and structure, what’s entertaining and what’s not? Why do I feel compelled by some plot structures and not others? This was a great lecture on our assumptions as audience members and potential media makers regarding the entertainment and story telling element of cinema and film media in particular.

‘Remix & Copy’ encouraged me to reflect on what exactly is an original artefact and does it exist today? As media makers we are always sourcing ideas sometimes deliberately and sometimes they’re just within us. How does appropriating this material and turning it into something new, effect the original artefact? Remixing and copying has the power to change the context of the original song for example. This lecture also brought in issues around copyright and as a media maker we need to be aware of these issues.

‘Media Materialism’ was a reading that discussed culture and technologies. During the semester I have become aware how connected and reliant we are on media technologies and how our identity is no longer something that stands alone. We rely on media just like we rely on air. This reading describes how linked technology is with our own cultural developments.
