With the influx of smartphones, the Internet, social media, and the abundance of cable and free-to-air television channels, one of the greats is being forgotten. Yep, that’s Radio that I’m referring to. Personally, every time I hop in the car the radio tunes straight on to Smooth FM or MIX for a bit of a singalong. But as TV became more popular, radio began to sizzle out, particularly evident with Gen-Y audiences. This trend lasted quite a few years, however it appears that in recent times, Radio has taken a little bit of a different approach, where anyone who wants to can get involved with a lot less effort that it used to be.
I’ve personally seen a huge increase in the number of amateur radio broadcasts. With so many online streaming options, It’s easy to get involved, and more and more people are doing so. Compared to TV, radio is inexpensive to produce, and funding (if you need it, that is) won’t take too long at all. In fact, Melbourne has the highest number of community radio stations in the world. Withthat being said, I took it upon myself to get involved. Together with a few friends, each Friday night I commentate an AFL game. The gem of radio is that it can exploit the lack of vision. So mute the rubbish that AFL commentary has become, tune in to Ben Gogos’ site or the live scores at DT Live where #fantasyfm will be streamed live, and enjoy the evening!
