Ready Camera One – A4 Blog Post 3

Leading up to week 10, I have been researching late-night talk shows for inspiration when creating the EVS content. I had the task of creating EVS for stings, the title sequence, and a recap video package for episode 2.  In terms of creating the title sequence, I watched several videos of SNL and Conan O’Brien first and noted down common tropes present in their title sequences. I noticed that they include lots of B-roll shots of the city they’re hosting the show in, commentary hyping up and introducing the host, and the typical jazzy live band talk-show music, to name a few.

I first sourced copyright-free music that fits the chaotic and lively atmosphere of ‘The Charlie Show’, then copyright-free videos of Melbourne’s scenery and famous hotspots i.e. Hosier Lane, Chinatown, and Trams. Furthermore, I created the title sequence on Premiere Pro and added in fake crowd cheers, captions that hypes up the host, and recorded commentary audio welcoming the host onto the stage to complete that full talk-show intro experience.

In terms of the Stings, we went through the theme of each segment and noted down ideas of how it can resemble in the sting. For example, the SNL sting that introduces their game night segment was relatively simple and self-explanatory. Reading the outline of the ‘Ben on Bowen’ segment, we discussed that it was loosely based on ‘Billy on The Street’, and I took the microphone aspect of the segment and used that to explain to the audience what it’s about.

Moving on, I had a big challenge ahead of me in terms of creating a ‘previously on’ video package. Discussing with the group on the outline of the video package, we intend to take the most entertaining bits of episode 1 and create the most dramatic, soap-opera, recap video of the chaos that ensued in episode 1. When it came to brainstorming, I immediately envisioned a dramatic ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians’ recap video and I was going to use black and white effects for the comedic aspect, and tension-building music backing the “deep-rooted issues” of ‘The Charlie Show’.

I took inspiration from WandaVision’s ‘previously on’ intros for the opening of the video package, and the season 1 recap of ‘The Morning Show’. I definitely took lots of tropes from ‘The Morning Show’ recap video as it perfectly captures and replicates the drama and plot twists present in ‘The Charlie Show’.

So far, I am happy with the stings and the title sequence which I have created for the show. Everyone is working hard in their respective roles, and I am excited to see it play out when we have our first recording.
