I’m finding as the course continues, I’m less motivated and enthusiastic about coming. It’s almost the end of the semester and I’m in what I like to call ‘Struggletown’. I’m in this town so deep that I own a home and two investment properties there.
I think my lack of energy can be attributed to the fact that this course isn’t shaping up to be what I had expected. I assumed this was RMIT’s iteration of the regular Film and Television course offered at other universities, but it is a lot more general media based (advertising, journalism, marketing and PR all seem to find their way into it) and is almost all theory based. The practical work we get to do isn’t really explained or taught – it’s a case of being sent off into the world to make with little coaching. I was hoping to learn camera techniques, industry standard editing, sound production, etc. Not so far.
It’s led to me wanting to change courses pretty badly. If it wasn’t for the Intel internship I would be tempted to change mid year, but I’m holding out in the hope that the studios will improve upon the current model. Maybe then my grades will improve too…
