Film an object from an animal’s perspective.
I filmed a strawberry from a fish’s perspective.
WHAT I LIKE:
- Choice of fish perspective (round glass fishbowl and water distortion of image).
- Choice of strawberry as object (bright and red and noticeable and interesting. And bizarre.).
- The blue tint (edited) to suggest water.
- The single shot. Simple. Works.
- The lighting and shape of everything in frame – I got my mum to hold a torch over the strawberry to make it appear strikingly illuminated in the dark. Bright red. Then I like how this is distorted and the light curves because of the perspective from the fishbowl. And that curve keeps changing slightly because of the camera and water movement.
- The household television sound. (Yes, The Big Bang Theory is playing in the background.) At first, I didn’t like this. But now, I do like it because it creates the typical homely, casual household atmosphere.
- Rippling surface of the water shown at one point in the video. I like this because it adds another sort of dimension. Or just emphasises the three-dimensional quality. It also suggests movement of the supposed ‘fish’ in the bowl (even though, realistically, that probably wouldn’t cause the water to ripple like that).
- Bizarre, surreal feel. Visually interesting and beautiful. It reminds me of Salvador Dali’s style of paintings. He’s my favourite artist.
WHAT I DON’T LIKE:
- Sound could have been muffled to better suggest underwater perspective.
- Not great quality image. The damn purple tint is still creeping through.
- Not that convincing of being inside the bowl – you can see the blurred outer-glass (marks on it and whatnot). Bit annoying, but oh well.
Overall, creative interpretation of brief. Visually interesting video. Great bizarre, surreal feel. But it’s not the most successful impression. It’s obvious that we’re filming from outside the bowl.
