Week 5.
I looked at Bec’s video sketch of ‘an object from an animal’s POV’.
The object was a lampshade type-thing-majig. The animal was a goldfish.
What is nice about this video is the way it is structured. There are four shots. The first three shots set up the situation.
1. We see the lampshade thing from a person’s POV.
2. We see goldfish swimming in the pond from a person’s POV.
3. We see a CU of the lampshade thing, again from a person’s POV. This is purely to reinforce the lamp as the object of focus.
These three shots only take up half of the video’s running time.
The fourth shot takes up the other half of the whole video’s running time; it is the key shot.
The fourth shot is a particularly clever shot. It gives the impression of seeing the lampshade thing from below the water’s rippling surface – from the perspective of a goldfish. Except I think it was done by bringing the camera very close to the water’s surface and focusing it on the reflection of the lampshade. The water ripples would have been man-made in order to distort the appearance of the lampshade, and to give the effect of light flickering off the water’s surface. This ultimately affords the ‘underwater’ illusion.
The soundtrack was also a nice touch :)
