I know its still half a month away but I thought I’d get the message out there before someone makes this mistake: April Fools is not an excuse to be a d*ck.
This reminder comes after we received a lecture about being an ethical media practitioner, which includes respecting your participants, and with the rise of Youtube ‘pranksters’ who think they can get away with anything if it gets them some views.
Prank videos have grown in popularity and are now more easily produced by anyone, and this can have unfortunate consequences, such as Sam Peppers infamous ‘fake hand prank’ where he pinched girls bums and was then accused of sexual assault.
Remember, this April Fools if you’re recording your pranks or even just messing around with your friends to respect your prankees, and take your cue from prank videos like Prank It Forward, or NigaHigas ‘prank’ of dressing like a ninja and sneakily delivering meals to homeless people. The best pranks are ones that will leave everyone laughing.
And if all else fails, no harm ever came from a simple Rick Rolling.
