The sheer amount of variety of styles and effects used in the music videos made in this class has been astounding, and I’m so glad to have been exposed to so many different techniques that have inspired me. Seeing people achieve all these great things that I can copy be inspired by has been fantastic.
Green screen and projection work were probably the most popular technique, they were used by my group as well, and its been a real learning experience to see the different ways people go about doing it. One group was creating a music video for ‘Pockets’, and they wanted a psychedelic effect to go on the green screen behind their singer, so they experimented with dye in milk to have the blending of colours with the white backdrop intact. My group wanted to use footage from one setting and bring it into another, so we projected leaves from the forest we filmed in onto the studio walls and our singers faces. The third group to use this technique went similar to the first in that they used dye, but in water and projected onto the singer rather than on the green screen. It was amazing to see how something similar could be used so differently and create a completely different feel each time.
One of the most stand out effects for me was with the group handling the song ‘Justin Beiber’, and their use of frames within frames. Ive seen green screen before, I’ve seen silhouettes and projections before, but I am very hard pressed to remember the last time, if any, that I’ve seen a screen within a screen done in this way. It was unique, and the first time it popped up I was hesitant to form an opinion, but it just worked so perfectly with the eclectic vibe of their video. It’s one effect I would be hesitant to try myself, because I can see it going very wrong, but I won’t know until I try.
