For Project Brief Two we were required to analyse a music video of our choice to look at how it was made, how it is influence by or has influenced other works and several other aspects of the music video. I chose my video by basically clicking one music video then followed a click trail through the recommended videos until I came across the music video for Mumford and Sons song ‘I Will Wait’. I didn’t choose this song, but it made me remember an old music video of theirs, for ‘Hopeless Wanderer’
This music video came out when I was in high school, it hadn’t been immensely popular but it had been pretty funny so it had come to my attention. It was only when I looked it up again to consider it for my project that I noticed something odd. The people in the video were not Mumford and Sons. It took googling it to confirm it but yep, those were not the singers and musicians of the band, they were famous comedian actors.
I wasn’t particularly well versed in pop culture the first time I watched it.
Now, having seen ‘Were The Millers’, I was intrigued by the fact that the band had gotten someone else to play them, and almost done a parody of themselves in their own music video. I was intrigued by the humour of the video, since when I think of Mumford and Sons, the one thing I think of thats consistent across their music is that they are ‘earnest’. Thats just the word I think of. They use a lot of references to classical literature, greek and latin poetry like the Iliad and Odyssey, and yet their music video was a comedic melodrama featuring comedians smashing instruments. It intrigued me enough that I decided to analyse it for my project.
