Week Eight Blogpost

a) Choose a scene from a food doco and write about all the sounds that are used and the effect they create.

The scene that I chose was the introductory element to Chef’s Table with Sean Brock. The first couple of minutes (before the opening title) represents Sean Brock as a personality – setting up his personality being a workaholic through the isolated sounds. By showcasing the intermingled sounds of fire/crackling, the guitar, as well as soft sounds of the massage – the fast paced music represents Brock’s headspace and his rattled thoughts, which is an interesting concept as I had never thought about using sound as an internal monologue of sorts. By creating these fast paced sounds, it allows the audience to get into the headspace of the interviewee, which I thought was an engaging and interesting concept which I hadn’t considered.

b) write about the sounds you can record in your documentary and what they will convey.

The sounds that I would like to convey in my own documentary are ambiance sounds with cooking – as well as voice-overs from Khahn – coupled with the sounds of the restaurant. Not only do I want this to convey the ideas of Sunda and the history that it represents, I also want to showcase the dish with voice-overs, cooking and scraping sounds as well as other elements of making the dish. Throughout service, I want to use the audio to create elements of ambience and show the viewers the busyness of the restaurant, as well as the calmness of the kitchen intermingled with sounds of cooking. By adding in elements of sound that aren’t directly voice-overs, I want to be able to showcase the sounds of the kitchen and adding an extra layer to my documentary that otherwise would not be there simply through interview and video.
